First Late Start Day is Wednesday, August 27th!
School Begins at 10:36 a.m.
Once again the Peabody staff is appreciative of our 10 PLC Late start days. These 10 – two hour late starts allow us as a staff to dialogue related to three key questions about student learning:
- What it is we want all students to learn at every grade level and in every content area?
- How will we know that students have learned?
- What will we do if they don’t learn or if they already have learned it?
Our work on August 27th will be in four areas:
- Dialogue about CSAP results from Spring 2008
- Dialogue about the new district Universal Literacy Framework
- Staff training on student health care action plans
- Teacher updates of their classroom web page
If you are in need of child care during our Late Start days, please contact Mary Lloyd with Panther Pride at 303-347-4635.
Facility Task Force Update:
As some of you know, I serve on the Facility Use Task Force as a principal representative. Our work has been extensive due to two issues – declining enrollment and declining resources. The charge of the committee is to find a method to best address the issue of underutilized facilities. This includes recommended minimum and maximum school enrollment sizes. The committee has identified values and criterion as they have done their work. The Task Force then applied the criteria to each LPS school. As a result, a number of schools were identified as not meeting the criterion:
- Nine elementary schools have an enrollment of less than 350 and/or building capacity of less than 75 percent
- Three middle schools have a building capacity of less than 75%
- One high school exceeded its building capacity
So to begin a conversation with the Board of Education, the Task Force developed a series of 12 elementary and 4 middle school ideas that move various school enrollments to other LPS schools. Peabody is one of those schools in one scenario. While there is no need to panic and these scenarios are simply a place to start, I would be remiss not to share this information with you, the Peabody community. In September there will be two public forums providing an opportunity for the community to let the Board of Education know your values around moving school populations. This issue will be addressed at both our September PTO meeting on September 9th and our PAC meeting on September 8th. Please join us for the most up to date information on this issue. I can be reached by email at kryan@lps.k12.co.us .
